PIM for the Electrical Industry

How do I turn my product data into a success story?

This is the question that manufacturers and dealers in the electrical industry are asking themselves today. Driven by the omnipresent trend towards digitalisation and the dynamic development of their own target markets, the handling of their own product data is not immune to change. Against this background, why is professional product information management so important? Actually, the industry is doing well: “The German electrical industry is showing itself to be stronger than it has been for a long time. Turnover and exports ended 2017 with records”, said Dr. Klaus Mittelbach, Chairman of the ZVEI Board of Management, at the annual opening press conference of the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association (Zentralverband Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie – ZVEI) with a view to the impressive industry turnover of 190 billion euros. But despite this positive development, there is no shortage of challenges.

The rules of the market are changing, whether due to the influence of digitisation, the energy revolution, Internet of Things or Industry 4.0. In this context, it seems that presenting one’s products and services on all channels in the same way and in line with customer expectations is a mammoth task. Product information must increasingly assume the role of personal product advice – both online and offline.

In this task, a Product Information Management System (PIM) helps you not only to capture product data centrally in one place and to harmonize it from different sources, but also to align it specifically to the specific requirements of the publication channels and, above all, target groups.

Our Solutions for the Electrical Industry

Targeted Preparation of Product Data

Product information is now more comprehensive than ever. It is no longer enough to publish just a few technical features from the ERP system in the sales channels. Today’s customers, be they wholesalers, architects or local craftsmen, need qualified and high-quality information that goes beyond standard information.

The prodexa PIM system not only helps you to maintain extensive technical features, but also to enrich them with target-group-specific marketing and sales-promoting product descriptions. For example, you can quickly create different descriptions for end customers or business partners.

With the help of the fully integrated Digital Asset Manager (DAM), you can supplement your products with image-forming information in the form of meaningful images, graphics, manuals and quick guides in any language.

Dealing with Classifications and Legal Requirements

Today, product data must be aligned to specific target groups. On the other hand, there are cross-company industry standards and legal regulations to be observed. Product classifications such as ETIM, UNSPSC, eCl@ss or profiCl@ss need to be taken into account, labeling requirements implemented and safety regulations such as the European Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX) fulfilled. Manufacturers must be able to provide such qualified information. Traders, on the other hand, must have the ability to transfer the product data supplied to stationary and/or digital distribution channels with the least possible effort.

We help you to structure these comprehensive standards in parallel in the PIM and to import or export them with the help of convenient mappings. For example, mappings between ETIM 5,6 and 7 can be created quickly or entire classification systems can be assigned via rules (e.g. ETIM to eCl@ss). In addition, you get transparency about features that have to be labelled and necessary, country-specific regulations such as REACH or RoHS, which you can store directly on the respective articles.

Transparency Over the Entire Product Life Cycle

Product information today consists of much more than just technical attributes. If one thinks of topics such as IoT or Industry 4.0, products today carry more and more digital information over the entire product life cycle. Examples of this are product activation, firmware and software updates or the transmission of data during operation. Against this background, not only “tangible” products must now be maintained, but also the relationship and compatibility with digital “products”.

Especially in the electrical industry, products are used in different scenarios. Sensors, cables or plug connections are not produced for a specific application, but can cover a wide range of applications depending on the configuration. The prodexa PIM enables you to meet exactly these requirements, be it by displaying products with hundreds of features or simply maintaining articles with many variants for different application scenarios.
